GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Moultrie native Kenneth Stanford is one of 18 nominees for induction into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame this year.

Stanford, 74, began his career in broadcasting at WMTM in Moultrie in 1960 while still in high school, serving as weekend and summertime fill-in announcer. After graduating from Moultrie High School in 1963, he attended a radio and TV broadcasting school in Atlanta.

Stanford, who is now semi-retired, has spent his entire career in Georgia working at WAKE in Atlanta, WBIE in Marietta,  and WDUN in Gainesville, in addition to WMTM.

From 1974 until he retired in 2011, he served as news director for Jacobs Media Corp. in Gainesville, the parent company of WDUN-AM, WDUN-FM, WGGA-AM, and AccessWDUN, a news-oriented website.

In semi-retirement, Stanford has continued on a part-time basis with Jacobs Media, as Contributing Editor, primarily focused on developing stories for AccessWDUN.

He is the winner of numerous Associated Press news awards. Stanford is a former judge of state and national AP broadcast contests, a former member of the board of directors of the Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association (GAPBA), and former board member of the Georgia Association of Newscasters (GAN). In addition, in 2005, he was presented with GAPBA President’s Award for Excellence in Journalism.

“It is an honor just to be nominated for induction into the hall of fame,” Stanford said, “and I cannot help but think about some of the people at WMTM who helped me launch a boyhood dream of becoming a radio announcer — PeeWee Mills, Doug Turner and Donnie Turner.”

He is married to the former Sandra McKnight of Clio, Alabama, and they have one child, a daughter, Lisa, who lives with her husband and their 11-year-old son in Cumming, Georgia.

This year’s inductees will be announced Oct. 26 at the annual meeting of the Georgia Radio Museum and Hall of Fame in LaGrange.
