MOULTRIE, Ga. — Latino farm workers were targeted in another theft Tuesday, but unlike some other recent incidents, this one did not involve a threat of force.

Hector Ayala, of Lakeland, Ga., told deputies Tuesday that six field workers who work for him had their wallets stolen off the work bus in the 1000 block of County Line Road, near Omega.

Ayala said he saw all bags and property secured on the bus about 11:30 a.m. when the workers returned to the field from their lunch break.

Later, he found a wallet in the field and another in the wood line next to a driveway. Both had had any cash in them removed but cards were still in them.

After taking Ayala’s report, the deputy found a third wallet in the driveway of a field road.

Ayala estimated $1,300 in cash was taken, although he couldn’t say how much was in any individual wallet.

The theft followed an armed robbery Saturday in which $1,240 and a Samsung Note 4 were taken from farm workers at their residence on Coy Cox Road, also near Omega; a resident on Circle Road reported an intruder hit him in the head early Monday morning; and field workers reported hiding from a suspicious vehicle Monday night on Highway 37 East.

Other robberies have targeted field workers in Tift and Cook counties, and law enforcement here and in those counties are trying to determine if they’re related to one another.

• Sylvia M. Carter, 1300 block Summer Circle, reported June 24 that around June 1 she’d given her 2004 Kia Optima to a repairman whose shop was located behind NT Tire Service, 233 Pineview Ave. The man made the repairs and returned it, but then she sent it back to him for more work.

More recently, she has been unable to reach the repairman. She went to the shop, and the owner of NT Tire Service said the repairman had gone out of business. The tire service owner said he had rented shop space to the man, but he wasn’t affiliated with him any other way.
