CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A man upset that his two children had been given to someone else to watch for the weekend took them from a couple and came back with a knife and tried to stab the man, leaving a hole in the man’s shirt and a “small scratch to his upper left chest,” according to an incident report.

Jeffery Allan Stafford, 34, of 604 Fagala Road in Chatsworth, was charged Thursday by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office with aggravated assault and terroristic threats and acts. He remained in the Murray County jail on Monday. His bond was set at $4,000.

The charges stem from an incident on May 19. According to a Murray County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Stafford’s children were being watched by a couple and they went to a chicken house to pick up a watermelon. Stafford, who was at the chicken house, “became angry due to them watching his kids when he wanted them this weekend,” the man who suffered the scratch said. He said the children’s mother had given Stafford’s father permission to watch the children and that man gave the couple permission to watch the children.

The man said Stafford was “yelling/cursing” at the couple, and put the “young children” on a dirt bike and took them to his residence.

Later, the man and his grandson were working at the chicken house when Stafford came back on a dirt bike. The man told a deputy he was in a room working when he heard Stafford yell at him, “I’m going to shoot you.” The man said he came out of the room with a hammer he was working with and asked Stafford what he said. The man said Stafford came toward him and tried to stab him with a knife.

“(The man) stated if he had not jumped backwards, then he would have been stabbed,” the report said. The man “had a small hole in his shirt that showed a small scratch to his upper left chest, between his armpit and breast area.”

Stafford left on the dirt bike when the man’s grandson called 911, the report said. A deputy tried to speak with Stafford at his residence but he wasn’t home.

“I could hear a dirt bike being ridden off in the distance,” the deputy wrote in the report.
