JASPER — A Jasper police officer was arrested Tuesday on charges of identity theft, credit card fraud and grand theft.
The officer, 56-year-old Reginald Akins, of Jasper, was arrested by agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement following an investigation.
He was immediately suspended by Jasper Police Chief Jeffrey McGuire upon his arrest.
The investigation by the FDLE began April 17 upon McGuire’s request after he received a complaint.
According to FDLE investigators, the suspect had done private investigation work for the victim and fraudulently added his name to the victim’s credit card and used it without consent.
The FDLE release states the suspect charged more than $6,800 for motorcycle parts and accessories at a Harley-Davidson dealership as well as charging $1,000 as a down payment on a new car and purchased new eyeglasses for nearly $200.
FDLE’s investigation is ongoing and investigators believe there could be additional victims.
If anyone has information about the suspect relating to the allegations, they should contact the FDLE Live Oak Field Office at 386-330-2840.
Akins was booked into the Suwannee County Jail on Tuesday following his arrest. He has since been released on a $45,000 bond.
