MOULTRIE, Ga. — Summer reading isn’t just for kids anymore. The Moultrie Library offers opportunities for children, teens, and adults to participate in Georgia’s collaborative reading program, A Universe of Stories. All events are free and open to the public. Adults are invited to participate in a timed reading challenge during the summer. Earn prizes for time spent reading! Participants can read books or magazines, read to others or just listen to a book. A weekly drawing for a swag-filled library tote bag will be held each Monday. All entries will be eligible for the chance to win a Kindle Fire or an Echo Dot! Stop by the library to pick up a reading log and detailed directions.

The 2nd Tuesday Brown Bag Book Club will meet Tuesday, June 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the library. The group reads books within a theme. It’s all right if you don’t read within that month’s theme, just come and share what you have read. Bring your own lunch or snack. The theme for June 2019: “Goodreads Staffer’s Summer Picks.” List available at the library or you can email amcnair@mccls.org for a digital copy.

Library Crafters will meet on Tuesday, June 11, at 6 p.m. in the library. The craft for June is Sea Glass Candle Sticks. This group is perfect for the casual crafter who enjoys doing something new each month. Activities are designed for adults, but children third grade and up may attend with a parent. Each participant will be asked to pay a $5 fee for supplies. Reservations for each meeting are required. The last day to register for the June session is Thursday, June 6.

The Colquitt County Ham Radio Society will meet on June 15 in the library from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the library’s classroom. Anyone interested in Ham Radio is welcome.

An Introduction to Genealogy will be held on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to noon. This free introductory session is for those just starting to research their ancestors. Topics will include an introduction to genealogy, record keeping, census records, and other resources, including the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library. Registration is requested.

Adult Game Day, Saturday, June 15, is a favorite of “Hand and Foot” players. Everyone is welcome. This is a fun card game that is based more on the luck of the draw than skill. Beginners and seasoned players are welcome.

The second session in our Adulting 101 Series, “Managing Your Money: Budgeting,” will meet on Tuesday, June 18, beginning at 6 p.m. Kathryn Holland of the local UGA Extension Office will lead this class on learning how to take charge of your money. Registration is required.

FamilySearch.org for Genealogy on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to noon is a workshop for beginning and intermediate level researchers who want to learn how to use this genealogy website. Participants should come prepared with the names of some deceased relatives as well as dates and places of birth and death if known. Registration is required for this free session.

Beginner Ukulele Workshop for Adults will be on Tuesday, June 15, at 6 p.m. This will teach you the basics, like the parts of the ukulele, how to hold the ukulele, strumming, and basic chords. Ukuleles are provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own instrument if they have one. This program is made possible by a grant from the Georgia Music Foundation.

Doerun

Several activities are planned for the Doerun Community Library this summer:

Each Thursday in June, “Take Me to Your Reader” will begin on June 6 at 3 p.m. This special time entertains kids ages 4-8 with stories, songs, and other fun activities. A special Craft Time will begin at 4 p.m. each Thursday.

On Monday, June 24, at 4 p.m., Creatures of the Galaxy featuring Animal Tales will present “out of this world” animal ambassadors that match constellations found in our galaxy.

 

Kids and teens

At the Moultrie Library, there are all sorts of adventures for kids and teens:

Baby Bees will meet every Wednesday morning at 10:30 for a gentle storytime for children ages 0-3.

On June 7 and June 21 at 2 p.m., the Friday Matinee will feature a family favorite that everyone can enjoy watching on the big screen.

On Monday, June 10, in the Star Wars Escape Room kids ages 6 and up will solve puzzles to escape the Star Wars themed room. Afterward, to celebrate the Legos Star Wars Day, Padawan builders can free build and master Jedi builders can construct a brand new Star Wars Lego set for display in the library, all while watching “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” on the big screen. The event is free but registration is required.

Sean Driscoll and the Story Ship will present Aliens Alive at the library on Tuesday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. The Story Ship’s science reporter, Sarah, is kidnapped by aliens while reporting live, and is trapped on a spaceship! We will use music, dance, and magic to help get her back in this fun, interactive show.

Want to learn a musical instrument? The ukulele is a great place to start! On Thursday beginning June 6 at 10:30 a.m. Take Me to Your Reader Storytime entertains kids ages 4-8 with stories, songs, and other fun activities. This storytime continues on June 13, 20 and 27.

Dewayne Reynolds, a magic and balloon artist known as Dr. Magical Balloons, returns this year on Friday, June 14, at 2 with his Fun Time Balloon Show. He will take us on a space adventure filled with aliens, rockets, and balloons.

If you enjoy slime then you will want to join us on Monday, June 17, at 11 a.m. to make space inspired Galaxy Slime in this Make and Take session.

To prevent the effects of summer slide, a fun, biweekly Blast Off Book Club will meet on Tuesday, June 18, at 2. The group will focus on graphic novels for kids on 2nd-3rd-grade reading levels. This week, we will be reading “New Shoes” by Sara Varon and designing our own newspaper shoes. The group is best for kids ages 7-10 on a 2nd/3rd-grade reading level.

Just for teens

There are several activities specially designed for teens:

The Teen Star Wars Escape Room on Saturday, June 8, at 2:30, will involve teens 12 and up in teams of 4-6 people solving puzzles to escape the Star Wars themed escape room. The event is free but registration is required. “The Last Jedi” (PG-13, 2.5 hours) will be shown in the auditorium after everyone escapes.

At 5:30 on Tuesday, June 11, the Shelf Space Teen Book Club will meet in the Teen room. Since school is out, this is a great time to read that book you’ve been hearing about — on TV, social media, from friends…now you can find out if it’s really worth all the buzz! Meet with other teens to discuss what you’re reading, and hear about other books that might interest you, too! Ages 12-18.

Teen Paint Night is Tuesday, June 18, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Teens are invited to make their own Moon Masterpiece at the library. All materials are provided. Ages 12 – 18 are welcome.
