MOULTRIE, Ga. — A suspect was detained Wednesday night after an altercation in a Moultrie grocery store left a man wounded.
The Moultrie Police Department incident report said Archie Hampton, 48, was detained at the Colquitt County jail, but an arrest report listing the exact charge or charges was not available Thursday.
Police said Nathan Smiles “had two huge lacerations on his face starting at his ear and going down his jawline bleeding very bad, also a large gash on his left forearm.”
After speaking with the officer, Smiles was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, the report said. A hospital spokeswoman said Smiles was treated at the emergency room and discharged home.
Smiles told the officer he was in Save-A-Lot, 205 Sixth St. S.E., with Hampton, whom he knows. He said they argued and Hampton “all of a sudden” cut him in the face with something.
Hampton had left the store, but police found him and brought him back. He told the officer Smiles had said he was going to beat him up, so he picked up an unknown object and hit him with it, according to the officer’s report.
A witness said he knew both men. He said he was talking to Hampton when Smiles walked up and began to say he was going to beat Hampton up. The witness said he separated them and began to walk Smiles in the opposite direction. He said he saw Hampton come behind him suddenly and take a swing at Smiles with a paint scraper, and it cut Smiles on the arm and face.
