MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Colquitt County School System recently applied for and was awarded “The Summer Transition Program” competitive grant.
This will provide four summer school classes from Bright from the Start, a program of the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL).
The Summer Transition Program is a six-week intensive academic program for rising kindergarteners and pre-kindergarteners who meet eligibility requirements. The program will operate from June 3-July 12 and will be closed July 4 and 5.
Instruction will focus on language, literacy, and math. Transportation, breakfast, lunch, school supplies, and field trips will be provided free of charge. Applications are being accepted at all Colquitt County elementary schools and the Pre-K office.
“This is something Colquitt County Schools has been working on since we became a charter system in 2015,” Pre-K Director Nick Chastain said. “The Colquitt County Board of Education recognized how important early learning is to local work force development efforts.
“The Board of Education has consistently supported early learning efforts in Colquitt County,” Chastain said. “Colquitt County Schools began its pre-k program in 1993 with 40 student spaces (2 classrooms). It has since grown to 26 pre-k classrooms.
“The Colquitt County community benefits from the availability of free universal pre-k for every eligible four-year old, something very few districts in the nation, if any, can claim,” he said.
