MOULTRIE, Ga. — National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Moultrie’s John Benning Chapter recently recognized the Morning Glory Garden Club for its ongoing restoration and preservation of the historic Westview Cemetery with the Historic Preservation Recognition Award.

Westview is the final resting place for many of the county’s pioneer families, military heroes, community leaders and hundreds of country residents. It was started in 1894 when citizens carried their deceased loved ones to the western edge of town for burial.

In 2006, with the combined efforts of the garden club and other groups, the first step of the preservation project was the arduous task of documenting all graves. After the creation of two main entrances marked by brick columns, the entire property was enclosed using a combination of wrought iron and chain link fencing. Another major project was landscaping and adding irrigation to the cemetery. To guide visitors through the historic site, an audio tour organized by several civic groups was produced and made available at the local chamber of commerce and public library. The video is also available on the City of Moultrie’s website. The preservation project was funded by local individuals, businesses and community grants.

One of the largest women’s organizations in the world, DAR strives to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism via commemorative events, scholarships and educational initiatives, citizenship programs, service to veterans, meaningful community service, and more.
