COHUTTA, Ga. — Some members of the Cohutta Town Council were mum Friday afternoon about why they placed Police Chief Ray Grossman on temporary paid administrative leave earlier in the day.

“It is something that was brought to our attention, and we thought we needed to look into it,” council member Shelia Rose said.

She declined to elaborate.

A post to the police department’s Facebook page titled “Community notice” announced that Grossman had been placed on administrative leave until June 4. Mayor Ron Shinnick said that is the date of the council’s next scheduled meeting. Assistant Police Chief Kyle Moreno is acting chief until then.

Reached by Facebook message, Grossman wrote “It’s an unfortunate situation.” He declined to comment further. Grossman said attorney Marcus Morris is representing him. Morris did not immediately return a telephone message left at his office Friday afternoon.

Shinnick also declined to say why Grossman was placed on leave.

“We are looking into a few things,” Shinnick said. “I want to get some more information before I say anything else.”

Asked if the issue involved Grossman’s job performance or something that happened off the job, Shinnick said, “I’m still trying to gather information.”

Asked who brought the issue to their attention, Shinnick said, “The council has some concerns.”

Grossman was hired as the town’s police chief in 2006. He previously was in the narcotics division of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Grossman is the second small-town police chief in north Whitfield County to be placed on leave in recent weeks.

Varnell Police Chief Lyle Grant was placed on paid administrative leave last month after District Attorney Bert Poston said a Whitfield County grand jury will hear evidence from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on May 30 concerning Grant’s providing a county-owned, encrypted radio to a Dalton wrecker service. Mayor Tom Dickson said Grant is on leave pending a decision by the grand jury. Lt. Greg Fowler is interim chief.
