City of Moultrie workmen are replacing a drainage pipe between the Intermodal Transportation Facility and Shepherd’s Lumber in this photo shot from across East Central Avenue. On Monday, the Georgia Department of Transportation will join the project a block south, on First Avenue Southeast. The DOT will have to dig up at least part of the roadway, so First Avenue will be closed Monday for the work; the DOT hopes to have the roadway open again Thursday.

MOULTRIE, Ga. — City crews were working Friday on a drainage problem that will cause a major street to be closed most of next week.

Moultrie Street Superintendent Ashley Cook said the failure of a drainage pipe was discovered while workers were addressing a storm drainage problem between the Intermodal Transportation Facility and Shepherd’s Lumber. The city crew was working Friday on the line near East Central Avenue, which is a city street. Barrels and vehicles marked the work area, but Central Avenue was not blocked off Friday.

On Monday, though, the work will transition south to First Avenue Southeast, which is part of state-owned Highway 37 West. The state Department of Transportation will close First Avenue Southeast between Second and Fifth streets on Monday, May 20, according to a press release from the agency. Work there will require digging up at least part of the roadway, a DOT spokeswoman said

Weather permitting, the DOT expects to be able to reopen First Avenue on Thursday, May 23.

While the roadway is closed, signs will direct motorists to alternate routes.
