MOULTRIE, Ga. — On April 30, the Boys and Girls Club of Moultrie-Colquitt County celebrated their 10th anniversary with their annual banquet that featured Winston Scott, a former NASA astronaut, The Boys and Girls Club Local Youth of the Year Odessa Dixon, and a fundraiser that saw them reach their goal of  $100,000.

The banquet turned out to be a huge success. Scott entertained the crowd with stories about being an astronaut and brought it all together by crediting the Boys and Girls Club for his upbringing.

Joseph Matchett IV, chief professional officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Moultrie and Colquitt County spoke about the Scott’s presentation afterwards and had nothing but great things to say about him.

“The banquet was great,” said Matchett. “His presentation was very engaging and interactive. He tied his career success and opportunities with his child development experiences at the Boys and Girls Club. He spoke about diversity and how being a member of the club as a child helped prepare him for diversity. Most importantly, he stressed the importance of investing in the lives of young people because you never know where that child may end up.”

Another annual tradition of the banquet is having the Boys and Girls club local youth of the year give a speech about “Why the club is important to them.” The award is given to the club member who demonstrates sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community. This year’s recipient, Odessa Dixon, is a standout at C.A Gray Junior High School participating in tennis and track while maintaining a high GPA.

Matchett and his staff have already started discussing plans for next year’s banquet. He thanked the community for their support of ten year’s in the community and making this year’s banquet a huge success.

“Thanks for the support you all have given for the past ten years. It means so much to us,” Matchett said. “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them, and this community has come together for the Boys and Girls Club numerous times — and we hope they can continue to, as we help to shape the leaders of tomorrow.”
