TIFTON, Ga. – The widening and reconstruction of SR 133 between Valdosta and Moultrie comes to an end this week with the completion of a final 5.43-mile section in Brooks County.
“The construction of additional lanes should allow SR 133 to operate more safely and efficiently. It will increase roadway capacity and allow motorists to pass larger or slower traveling vehicles. This mostly rural section of highway has a high percentage of trucks as well as farm equipment,” said Georgia Department of Transportation Southwest District Construction Engineer Van Mason.
The SR 133 corridor is in the Governor’s Road Improvement Program (GRIP), a system of economic development highways. Construction to improve SR 133 began in 2014 on the first of five sections on the south end of the route.
The last leg to be completed, from Pauline Church Road to Old Quitman Adel Road, is scheduled to be free of construction barrels and signs Thursday, May 16. The speed limit was lowered to 45 mph during construction. It will be raised to 55 mph from Pauline Church Road to Morven. The speed limit will remain 45 mph through the city of Morven.
Still to come is the widening and reconstruction of the north end of the route between Moultrie and Albany. Construction will again be divided into five projects. About 66 miles of SR 133 between Valdosta and Albany will be upgraded once all the projects are complete.
The remaining sections and proposed fiscal year (FY) of construction are listed below. The dates are subject to change.
