MOULTRIE – In 2018, Lemeke Brockington emerged as the No. 1 touchdown receiving threat in the Colquitt County High offense.
In the annals of Packer scrimmage history, Brockington and the incumbent starting quarterback, Jaycee Harden, put together one of the best combinations ever. Harden threw three scoring passes Saturday to Brockington during intra-squad play under the watch of first-year head coach Justin Rogers. After most of the series that started the morning were dominated by the defense, the Packer offense began picking up its part of the show with all three quarterbacks getting a chance to display their arms.
But first, it was the Colquitt defense with its new boss, Shawn Campbell, putting its own points up (three for each third-down stop) as they caught running back Daijun Edwards on a swing reception and got a ‘sack’ from LaQuavion Haynes. He and Nathan Bell, a fellow defensive lineman, shared another touch sack. The defense in fact had three sacks total.
Before Brockington made his plays, a rising sophomore named Ontavious Carolina caught a couple of passes for the second unit run by QB’s Tucker Pitts and Zane Touchton.
As Harden led the first string, the offense first moved with tight end Carter Boatwright catching first down yards on the 48. Tajh Sanders, who stayed on varsity all of 2018 as a freshman, caught passes on the 39 and in the end zone to give the offense their first points.
Perhaps no battle will be more interesting as the offseason moves on than who will replace Ryan Fitzgerald as Colquitt’s placekicker. Alex Romulo and Emmanuel Perez were both part of the program backing up Fitzgerald, and they were solid Saturday on PAT tries. Romulo also connected on a 21-yard field goal.
To set that up, Jamad Willis picked up some yards both receiving the drop-off from Touchton to the 39 and rushing the ball inside the ‘red zone.’ Carolina’s third big catch – this one from Touchton – spotted the Packer offense on the 5.
For his first touchdown pass to Brockington, Harden received significant help from an offensive line that may not be all returning starters, but all bring several snaps worth of experience to Rogers’ offense. Now snapping the football rising junior Trey McCoy, and beside him are guards Thomas Barry and Conner Gay and tackles Devene Jamerson and Remon Young.
With a ‘pancake’ block, Harden executed a run to the 46-yard-line. He then fired a 55-yard strike to Brockington, a play that send the scrimmage to ‘halftime.’
It was 3rd-and-10 in the second half when Harden, with good protection, went to Brockington on a sideline route. The result was a 60-yard touchdown.
The offense went on to score six more times, and this is when Rogers called for shorter starting positions. There was a big catch by Orion Bonner in the second unit putting the Packers on the 1 before scoring.
Afterwards, Edwards ran into the end zone to cap a 25-yard series. Spradley and Willis scored on the ground on drives of 15 yards, and Touchton was credited with a 10-yard scoring pass.
When Rogers sent the football back to the other side of the 50 (60 yards away from pay-dirt), Harden found Brockington the third time, this covering 50 yards.
