MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie man shot multiple times in a Friday night robbery attempt had flashed money online, which apparently made him a target in the assault.

Mardez Miles, 21, was in a hospital in stable condition and is expected to recover fully, Moultrie police said on Tuesday.

Miles was at his 902 Sixth St. N.W. residence with two 18-year-old acquaintances shortly before 11 p.m. Friday. Police identified the two who were with him as Billy Drequan Stafford and Kree Unique Herring.

“He was hanging out with Kree Herring and Billy Stafford when a black male came into the apartment and opened fire on him,” Moultrie Police Department Lt. Freddie Williams said. “The investigation revealed that Kree Herring, Billy Stafford and (the third suspect) planned to rob Mr. Miles.”

Herring and Stafford went to the police department the same night. Police arrested the alleged gunman, Zy’Treckius KeyTwain Ellis, also 18, on Monday.

“He posted money on social media,” Williams said of Miles. “That led to the attempt to rob him. The Moultrie Police Department encourages people not to post things like that on social media.”

Stafford, 935 Fifth Ave. S.W., and Herring, 413-B Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, are charged with three felony counts as party to the crimes of attempted robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Ellis, 904 Sixth St. N.W., was charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Police have recovered a handgun but are awaiting ballistics tests to determine if it was the gun used in the shooting. They also are investigating whether the incident is gang-related.

Williams said that officers had assistance from the community in the investigation.

“MPD would like to thank the public for help with this case,” he said.
