MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Wednesday morning traffic stop of a driver who reportedly was not wearing a seat belt led to his arrest and the seizure of more than $1,600 and suspected marijuana.

A Moultrie Police Department officer stopped the 1999 Buick LeSabre driven by Shawn Demetrius Spivey at about 9:13 a.m.

“When he (the officer) made contact he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” said Sgt. Channing McDowell of the Moultrie-Colquitt County Drug Enforcement Team.

While investigating the officer found a plastic container under the driver’s seat, McDowell said. Inside were small plastic bags — four blue, five pink and one clear bag, with the colors apparently denoting their prices.

“It was bagged for distribution,” he said.

Officers also found $1,650, mostly in $20, $10 and $5 bills, with a few $50s and $100s on Spivey, McDowell said.

Spivey, 45, 722 Northside Drive, was charged with possession of marijuana.

He was released Wednesday on a $6,000 bond.
