WHITE SPRINGS, Fla. — Tonja Brown and Tom Moore won seats on the White Springs Town Council during Tuesday’s election.

Brown received 95 votes, Moore received 89 and Arthur Natteal received 70.

Brown has already been serving on the council, currently as vice mayor. Moore will be a new member on the council, which also includes Mayor Spencer Lofton, Walter McKenzie and Helen Miller.

The town will hold an organizational meeting Thursday to swear in the new members and to choose a new mayor and vice mayor.

Also during Tuesday’s town election, four of the seven potential amendments to the town’s charter passed. Passing were Amendments 1, 4, 5 and 6.

Amendment 1 calls for designated seats for the council members and for those seeking election to announce which seat they are running for. Amendment 6 provided the council the authority to create and establish various boards and committees that comply with state law.

Amendment 4 amended the charter to establish town elections on the fourth Tuesday in April of each even-numbered year in order to accommodate four-year terms.

However, Amendment 2 that would have established four-year terms for council members was defeated in the election.

Amendment 5 that also passed designated when the next elections would be held for four-year terms (those elected Tuesday would be on the council until 2022 with elections again next year that would serve through 2024).

Town Manager Stacy Tebo is conferring with Town Attorney Karen Hatton to see if the various amendment results mean the council members will have four-year terms or not.

Also failing to receive support were Amendment 3 that would have given additional procedural guidelines for council meetings beyond Robert’s Rules of Order and Amendment 7, which said the corporate boundaries of White Springs would be defined by the ordinance of annexation that had the latest date.
