Irwin baseball completes athletics region triple crown

- Irwin County’s baseball team recently won the region championship of 2-A and are next headed to the state tournament.
OCILLA — Irwin County’s baseball team captured the Region 2-A title for the second consecutive year with a 10-0 victory over Turner County Tuesday.
Brodie Chestnutt threw a no-hitter for the Indians against Turner.
The Indians began region play with a 2-2 record before winning 12 straight games.
“I’m as proud of this team as any team I’ve ever coached,” said head coach Drew Tankersley. “We lost a couple of heartbreakers early in the season and this bunch could have folded, but they chose to battle.
“Our regular season has been a great example of overcoming adversity. That’s what’s great about baseball and sports in general.”
By winning region, Irwin County completed an athletics triple crown.
The Indians won region in football and boys basketball during the 2018-19 school year, believed to be a first for the school.
The next step for Irwin is the Georgia High School Association state baseball playoffs.
Matchups have not been announced yet, but as region champions, Irwin will have a first round bye.
