MOULTRIE – The bad news for Colquitt County High tennis is the 2019 season came to an abrupt ending Tuesday on the home courts.
On the boys side, the Packers of coach Mell Wier kept the drama alive as long as possible taking three out of the five matches to a third set. Only, there was no room for error as visiting Woodstock High was ahead 2-0, and a third victory for the Wolverines would end competition for the day.
Woodstock took No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles in straight sets. Plus, the Wolverines were up one set at the first two singles spots. For the Packers, No. 2 doubles Alyn Herndon and Zack Tucker were the only ones to take an opening set.
Packer Nate Corley, at No. 2 singles, and Woodstock’s No. 2 doubles won their respective second sets and noted that a lot of attention was at No. 1 singles.
Colquitt’s Hayden Holloway served to send his second set into a 6-6 tiebreaker. He fought off one match-ending point along the way, and the tiebreaker was on. Holloway never trailed, giving the spectators one more third-set option by winning 7-4.
But, the No. 2 singles third set ended 6-1 in Woodstock’s favor, sending the Wolverines into the second round.
Colquitt County’s Lady Packers gained one victory in the first three completed matches. That was at No. 2 doubles featuring Annabelle Roberts and Karli Yarbrough.
Woodstock’s girls were straight set winners at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 and 3 singles.
