LETTER TO THE EDITOR: NAFTA drove middle class from golf

The 1957 Masters tournament requested radio operators from the communications school at Fort Gordon Army school at Augusta, Ga., to relay scores to the tote board, using PRC-9 hand held radios. I was a student in the school at this time. I was aware of this social event, but I did not volunteer – sounded kinda boring at the time.
Mr. Doug Ford won the 1957 Masters with a three-stroke victory over Mr. Snead. Mr. Snead was ahead with a three stroke lead going into the final round. (Scouped from Wikipedia).
Tomorrow, April 11, this four day event continues, (from the first event held in 1934 on March 22, a one day event) at the Masters Mega-event. Tickets for the four day event costing ten grand – Sunday only cost of $2,523 average ticket price. These obscene prices leave only standing room for paying spectators.
Middle class Americans were eliminated from the sport of Golf by NAFTA – 1993. The game of Golf needs better trade agreements supporting mid-class golfers. Historically Golf was played by the privileged. In modern times golf needed head-counts at local golf courses.
When written descriptions of today’s sports venues (obscene cost), they become cynical by the facts, attendance cost the equivalent of a family vacation.
