MOULTRIE – For the second Friday night in a row, a late outburst of goals turned what was a frustrating time on the sidelines for Colquitt County High soccer into the more expected final.

Against a worn out defense from Coffee High, the Packers blasted three goals in the last 1:23 of regulation to defeat the Trojans 6-1 on the Packer Pitch. No. 7 in Class 7A on the eurosport.com Georgia rankings, Colquitt County improved to 14-1 with the biggest match of the season on the horizon. With all of the rain gone from the area of the high school campus, Coffee gave Colquitt 78 minutes of competitive soccer and did not yield the go-ahead goal until the 13-minute mark in the second half. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of the Packers, but Coffee found a leveling goal early in the second half.

That first-half point came quite early, but first the Trojans stuffed Pedro Luna’s opening bid to score 40 seconds into play. Luna took a crossing pass in the middle from Aldo Miranda, but the shot was saved.

At 34:30, Colquitt got the first corner kick, taken by Ruben Gonzalez. Juan Pascual leaped for the ball and used his head to find the net and the 1-0 lead.

Coffee didn’t fall back on its heels, instead making a push at 27:20. It’s one that brought goalkeeper Tony Jimenez up looking to play the ball. That ball rolled just to the other side of the post out-of-bounds, but it was a moment Jarvis certainly noticed.

Three minutes later, Colquitt took a corner kick, and John Reid Jarvis passed to Pascual for an attempt missing wide.

The Trojans soon thereafter earned a free kick about 20 yards from the goal at a right angle. Jimenez got to the ball at the 23-minute mark of the half.

Colquitt’s next clear shot on goal didn’t come until 11:20 as Ulisis Malagon crossed it to Josh Aviles. He would miss wide. There was quite a bit of wide shooting by the Packers and break-ups by Coffee inside the box.

As the half got under four minutes, Miranda charged down the sideline to earn another corner kick. Here, Humberto Aguilar had two shots blocked. Miranda rebounded for a strike deflected, giving his side one more corner try. The Trojans punched that ball away.

Three minutes into the second half, Coffee was awarded a free kick near the left corner. Much like Pascual did in the first half, the visitors were able to head-shot the ball in for an even match 1-1. Coach Jarvis made reference to a ‘cruise,’ but probably not about a Spring Break ocean trip.

Coffee found itself doing a lot more clearing than attacking for the rest of the half. At 33:25, Gonzalez had a shot blocked. John Reid Jarvis gathered the rebound for a strike saved. Three minutes later Gonzalez passed inside to Luna, and the visiting keeper smothered that attempt.

Jiminez caught an easy ball at 28:52, and the Packers found themselves with one corner kick after another. Luna charged the net to earn one at 28:14, and Jarvis’ pass to Pascual for a shot blocked at 24:10. Again, Coffee was able to clear away any danger to giving up the lead. Abram Sanchez’ header, from a 20:55 corner, was saved, and Coffee denied Pascual at 15:35.

Jimenez’ second save of the half came with less than 15 minutes to play.

For the go-ahead goal, Miranda made a mid-field steal and outran the opposition on the dribble into the box. He gave it up to Pascual, who notched his second goal.

Seven minutes later, Miranda found a second straight assist on another fast-break. He made sure teammate Luna stayed onside, and Luna connected for 3-1 Packers.

Miranda took advantage of a bad goal kick to get his goal for the night with 1:23 remaining. The Packers weren’t ready to rest, for Aviles got on the ball for a goal with 1:04 to play, and Aguilar scored at 8.6 seconds.
