UPDATE: Teen killed in Mayo wreck involving school bus

MAYO, Fla. — One person was killed in an accident Friday morning involving a Lafayette County school bus.

The accident occurred at 7:41 a.m. on County Road 300, west of SW CF Hart Lane, near Mayo.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Mazda pickup and the Lafayette County school bus were both traveling east on CR 300 when the pickup ran into the back of the bus.

The driver of the pickup, 17-year-old Chandler Lancaster, of Mayo, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Three passengers in the pickup — 15-year-old Brennen Dewey, 17-year-old Kaili Dewey and 14-year-old Katlyn Ducksworth, all of mayo — were transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. Ducksworth was in serious condition, according to the FHP report, while both Deweys suffered critical injuries.

Brennen Dewey was wearing a seatbelt but the other three were not, the report states.

There were 23 students onboard the bus at the time of the accident and none were injured.

According to the report, a witness traveling west on CR 300 observed the crash and stopped to offer aid and assistance.

A secondary crash occurred approximately 10 minutes later.

MAYO — One person was killed in an accident Friday morning involving a Lafayette County school bus.

According to Lt. Patrick Riordan with the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident involved a school bus and a small pickup truck. The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on County Road 300 near SW CF Hart Lane.

The driver of the pickup was killed in the crash, Riordan said, and three passengers in the pickup were transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville in serious condition.

No names have been released and the investigation is ongoing.

Riordan said it didn’t appear anybody on the bus was injured.

CR 300, which had been blocked from County Road 320 to SW Roosevelt Circle, following the wreck has been reopened for routine traffic, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
