TIFTON — Come one, come all, the circus is coming to town.
Cirque Italia, which bills itself as America’s first traveling water circus, will be performing in Tifton starting Thursday, Mar. 28 through Sunday, Mar. 31 at the American Legion Fairgrounds off Highway 82.
The circus, housed under a blue and white big top tent, features a 35,000 gallon water stage to not only accentuate the human acts, but as an entertainment feature in its own right.
While there are no animal acts, the entertainments include traditional circus acts like contortionists, the Wheel of Death (a spinning, rotating cylinder used by acrobats) and aerial acts, like the one Roxana Midi performs.
“I like to say that I’m dancing up in the air,” Midi said. “It’s a dance routine with aerial tricks and great music.”
She had performed for several years as a dancer before joining the circus, and said that, as a performer, it is a very different experience because of the water element.
“When you’re surrounded by the water, you feel a little bit more tiny, so you have to prove that you’re more, or above the water,” she said. “It’s offering to the people a very special type of entertainment. We’re using technology combined with music and performers from all over the world, from South America and of course from Europe, especially Italy.”
She said that the owner of the circus, Manuel Rebecchi, is from Italy and brought the circus over to the United States on a boat.
“We like to say that we’re bringing a little bit of Italy to the United States,” she said.
Midi, who is the ticket office manager as well, said that the circus isn’t sold out yet but that the sales are going very well so far.
“People (who are purchasing tickets) are very excited,” she said.
Anita Zeman, along with husband Karchy, performs as the Zeman Duo at the circus. They have a BMX act and a roller skate act and are also quick change performers.
“There’s a lot of acts from all over the world,” Anita said. “It’s a new experience for everybody.”
The box office is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on show days, and tickets range from $10 to $50, depending on which of the three levels the seat is in. The circus offers one free child admission with every full-priced paying adult ticket for levels two and three.
