- U.S. flags were placed at the 2018 Veterans Memorial Day Commemoration in honor of those killed in the line of duty during the Vietnam War.
MOULTRIE, Ga. — John Benning Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day with a brief ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 29, at the Eternal Flame at the Courthouse Square.
Vietnam veterans and the general public are urged to attend.
In 2012 the President and Congress of the United States declared March 29 “Vietnam Veterans Day” commemorating the date in 1973 when the last U.S. troops left Vietnam marking the end the 11-year conflict.
DAR will commemorate the day by placing a wreath in memory of service personnel listed on the Colquitt County War Memorial who died in the line of duty during the Vietnam War. U. S. flags for each of those listed will be placed around the Memorial. Vietnam veterans will be asked to locate where they served on a map of Vietnam. Veterans are urged to wear of any part of their uniform if they still have something.
The commemoration will conclude with the raising of the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Flag on the flag pole on the courthouse square.
The ceremony will be brief but those who have difficulty standing should bring a chair. In the event of rain, the event will be held at the VFW Post 4830 located at 1114 Fifth Ave. S.E.
The 2008 National Defense Authorization Act empowered the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program on behalf of the nation that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. To that end, “The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration” was formed. The commemoration extends from Memorial Day 2012 through Veterans Day 2025.
DAR is a commemorative partner of the Vietnam War 50th Commemoration. This event was one of several planned by John Benning DAR during the commemoration time period.
