Cairo church to be distribution point

CAIRO, Ga. — Victims of the tornado earlier this month are still struggling to regain their feet.
“It’s going to be a slow go,” said Bonnie McCormick, a Cairo resident involved in relief efforts.
McCormick explained that the part of town damaged by the March 3 tornado was poor, and many of the residents had limited insurance. Some of the damaged homes will have to be torn down completely, she said.
“Our church sits right in the middle of that area,” she said. That church, Full Gospel Chapel, will be a distribution center for donations.
The Moultrie Observer put out a call soon after the tornado to see who in our area was helping residents of Cairo. The only responses we received were from people who wanted to help but didn’t have an avenue to do so.
One of the callers, Homer Eldridge, kept looking when we couldn’t tell him of a local group that was helping out in Cairo, and he eventually met up with Clarcia Avery of Whigham, who was involved with relief efforts.
Avery contacted The Observer on Thursday to let us know she was partnering with Full Gospel Chapel, which could get supplies into the hands of the needy better than she could by herself. McCormick is her contact with the church.
McCormick said the residents need a variety of things:
• Canned food.
• Diapers, both for infants and for adults.
• Wipes.
• Cleaning supplies.
• Sheets and towels.
• Pots and pans.
• Dishes.
“Just whatever it takes to have a household,” she said.
