MOULTRIE – That young Colquitt County High baseball team keeps getting younger and younger, but also better and better.

Getting the rare chance to start in a mid-week non-region contest, freshman Pershaun Fann was the star of the seventh inning Tuesday. First, he throws out a potential lead run at home plate to end the top half, then he ends the bottom half on a two-out, 0-2 RBI single.

Senior Tucker Hathcock scored the winning run of a 4-3 victory against the Lee County Trojans on Ike Aultman Field at Jerry Croft Stadium.

The win improved Tony Kirkland’s Packers to 5-11. There will be a lot more non-region play coming up, like Friday’s road trip to Worth County High and next week’s visit from Thomas County-Central.

Just like they did before winning Game 1 of last Friday’s doubleheader at Tift County, Colquitt got behind early to the Class 6A Trojans 3-0. Though he labored through a lot of situations, senior Eli Faison gave Kirkland five innings as the starting pitcher. Lee County did not score again after the top of the second.

Jacob Walden got the win after going two scoreless innings. The Trojans stranded two runners in the top of the sixth.

The seventh, though, was a tale of two throws.

With one out, Jacob Barwick of Lee singled. There was a runner on second with two outs when Matt Cooper singled to right.

Lucas Tostenson’s throw to the plate prompted Lee coaching to tell his runner to get back to third base. Catcher Callon Kubiak made a stab for the out there, but the baseball wound up in left field.

“Now try to score!”

There was Fann, though, to pick it up and get the out at the plate.

Hathcock walked to lead off the home half, and freshman Cannon Whatley, the shortstop, bunted him to second base.

For the second straight plate appearance, JT Whatley was put on base intentionally. Brian Myler struck out Henry Daniels and was up 0-2 on Fann, but Fann smacked the game-winner to left.

Lee scored two in the second, Logan Goff getting a double, and one in the second on Goff’s two-out single. There were Trojans on every base in that turn when Faison got a ground-out to Reese Bledsoe.

Cannon and JT Whatley both singled with two outs in the home third to get the Packers on the board 3-1. The tying rally was in the fifth. The visitors put JT on base to load them all with two outs, but Daniels delivered a two-run hit.
