MAYO, Fla. — The numbers that Jasmine Lewis put up at Lafayette High, individually and team-wise, are staggering.
A five-year starter, she scored more than 2,000 points and pulled down more than 1,350 rebounds. During that time, Lewis led the Hornets to four district titles, five regional finals, two region championships and two berths in the Final Four.
Although she didn’t get the state championship she desired in her senior season, Lewis’ consistency and all-around skills on the court earned her the Suwannee Valley Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
She tallied 15.5 points, 12.1 rebounds. 3.4 assists and 3.0 steals per game during the 2018-19 season.
“We have had some great ones, and she’s one of the toughest ones,” longtime Lafayette girls basketball coach Jimmy Blankenship said of Lewis. “How hard she plays day in and day out — you worry about other things but you don’t have to worry about her.”
After averaging 10.5 rebounds per game as a junior, Lewis was even better on the boards as a senior. She also showcased an improved jump shot that came from a lot of work in the offseason.
Teammates took notice of Lewis’ work ethic.
“She was dedicated to the sport and tried to get better every day,” said Khari Jackson, who played alongside Lewis the past two seasons after transferring from Taylor County. “She led the team with assists, steals, defense, rebounds, you name it.”
Although the Hornets came up short in the playoffs, it wasn’t because of a lack of preparation or leadership.
“We may not have got to the Final Four and had the chance to play for a championship, but I feel like we gave everything we got,” said Lewis, who was recently named to the FACA Senior All-Star team. “I knew someone had to be the leader on the team and coach Blank was looking at me to do it.”
