More charges added to woman who was shot following I-75 chase

DALTON, Ga. — A woman who was shot by law enforcement officers near the Walnut Avenue exit in August of last year following a two-state chase on I-75 South has been indicted for a second time on 30 counts. Clinique Jashauna Jackson, 34, was indicted by a Whitfield County grand jury on 16 counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, 12 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, theft by receiving stolen property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Jackson was shot when she got out of a vehicle with two handguns and pointed them at officers, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Authorities in Bradley County, Tennessee, said she and Parrish Smaely, 56, of Jonesboro, fled from police after shoplifting and threatening a store employee with a handgun. Jackson remains in the Whitfield County jail without bond. Smaely pleaded guilty in February to fleeing/attempting to elude an officer for felony, DUI, misdemeanor obstruction of officers and felony theft by receiving stolen property. He was sentenced to three years in prison and banished from the Conasauga Judicial Circuit, which includes Whitfield and Murray counties.

Colquitt Regional Medical Center reports rise in flu cases

MOULTRIE, Ga. – After a seemingly mild 2018-2019 flu season, Colquitt Regional Medical Center has seen a recent influx of flu cases.  In the first week of March, the Emergency Department treated 66 confirmed cases of the flu, the hospital reported Wednesday. Of those, 56 patients tested positive for “Type A” flu, and 55 of the flu-positive patients were under the age of 17. The cases confirmed at Colquitt Regional do not include any flu tests taken at outpatient clinics, but Sterling Physician Group clinics have seen a rise in confirmed cases as well. “We are cautioning people to not let their guard down when it comes to the flu,” said Colquitt Regional CEO Jim Matney. “Preventative measures are being encouraged to everyone to decrease the transmission of the flu and masks are readily available at main entrances for those visiting loved ones at Colquitt Regional.” While this flu season has been less severe than years past, the public should continue to be vigilant in the fight against the flu, a hospital spokeswoman said. In addition to practicing good hand hygiene, cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces in homes, schools and offices can also deter infection.
