CHATSWORTH, Ga. — A former Murray County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was arrested on Friday and charged with rape and five other charges after he held a woman captive in her residence in Murray County, a law enforcement official said.

Kirk Taylor Martin, 28, of Acworth, was charged with rape, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated assault (family violence), criminal attempt to commit sodomy, false imprisonment and obstructing or hindering an emergency call.

The victim was held against her will on Thursday and into the early part of Friday before she was able to make contact with someone outside of the home, who contacted authorities, said Greg Ramey, special agent in charge with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Murray County deputies were sent to the residence and Martin was arrested without incident.

Murray County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jimmy Davenport said Martin was fired in April of 2018 after multiple violations of jail policy. Davenport said Martin was fired after giving an inmate the wrong prescription medication, and his other violations were procedural and did not relate to abuse or violence against inmates. Sheriff Gary Langford was not in the office Monday and could not immediately be reached for comment.

The GBI was called in to handle the investigation because of Martin’s former employment with the sheriff’s office.

A booking photo of Martin shows scratches across his chest and neck and swelling around both eyes. Ramey said those injuries were from the victim fighting back.

Martin was booked into the Murray County jail on Friday. After he was denied bond during a court hearing, he was transferred to the Rabun County jail in northeast Georgia.
