Another year, another win in the annual Pot ‘O’ Gold long drive contest at Sunset Country Club for local amateur Lee Wright. The Colquitt County High golf coach and member of two out of the last three winning Pot ‘O’ Gold pro-am teams, Wright drove a ball 309 yards Thursday from the 10th tee. Behind Wright was his teammate Aaron Elrod at 305 yards, followed by Bubba Bailey’s 304 and Tyler Key’s 301. Brian Dixon won the senior division at 287 yards followed by Keith Nagy (286) and Jeff Lawson (281).
In a stark contrast to 2018, when golfers were battling a heavy wind gust that had one participant stating “I can’t aim any more left,” the 2019 Pot ‘O’ Gold long drive contest had calm and clear conditions. Participants and spectators numbers were much better.
