The gathering, which has the theme of “Great Health and Nation Building” will take place at the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority, 1901 N. Forrest St.

Customary Ghanaian celebrations include a dance from students, a parade, food, music and events promoting peace and unity.

The Valdosta Ghanian observance will have traditional African food and dance, the singing of the Ghanian national anthem, prayer and the history of Ghana’s independence.

Dr. Samuel Ofori, oncologist for South Georgia Medical Center, will speak about the prevention and management of breast cancer.

“We’re trying to use this independence event to get more connected,” said Elsie Mensah, event secretary.

The event’s purpose is to increase awareness about the local African community, according to organizers.

“We’re trying to voice out and get people to know that we’re here,” said Diana Bamfo, event decorator. “We just want to start something in our community.”

In efforts to further this connection, organizers said American food will be available. Attire is traditional Kente clothing, but formal American wear is accepted.

“We’re just trying to get people to get to know our culture, the things we do and basically how we celebrate things,” Bamfo said.
