CAIRO, Ga. — Construction of the city’s new police station is now expected to be completed in spring 2020.

City Manager Chris Addleton told the city council Monday he hoped the project would begin breaking ground May 2019.

The city manager said a not to exceed price is scheduled to be presented before the council April 8, but added that it would likely not be approved until the following council meeting April 22.

Addleton said he is hoping to be able to complete construction by the end of December 2019, but anticipated weather delays will likely stretch the project into February or March 2020.

Construction of the 11,000 square-foot structure is projected to take eight to nine months to complete once underway.

The new structure, which will be located on 3rd Avenue NE, comes with a projected price tag of $3.3 million.

Addleton said he met Feb. 21 with police chief Keith Sandefur, architect Greg Smith and construction manager Doug Young to discuss the construction plans for the new station.

The city manager said the construction plans would be 100 percent completed by March 1.

Addleton said bids for undertaking the project are scheduled to open March 26.

Bainbridge construction management firm PDC Construction was awarded the rights to supervise the project by the council December 2018.
