MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County tennis teams took a pair of Region 1-7A victories on Tuesday at Packer Park, with the Lady Packers and Packers both taking 5-0 wins.
Both teams also raised their season records to 6-3.
“It’s been a successful start to the season,” said coach Mell Wier, adding that the record includes a victory over Camden County “for the first time in many years.
“All of our loses have been by a 2-3 score. “
Last week included five matches in five days and the Packers finished as runners-up at the Wildcat Invitational in Valdosta, losing to Pierce County 2-3 in the championship match.
With the win over Tift County, the Packers are 2-1 in the region.
All five wins against the Blue Devils came in two sets.
Hayden Holloway won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2; Nathan Corley won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0; and Gabe Shivers won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles, Kevin Johnson and Chris Rogers won at No. 1 6-1, 6-2 and Alyn Herndon and Aaron Long won at No. 2 6-1, 6-1.
“We did our job … did what we had to do,” Wier said. “That win over Camden kind of got us over the hump.
“And our doubles teams are really good. I’ll put them out there against anyone’s doubles.”
Other members of the team include Andy Zhang, Zack Tucker, Fletcher Jacobs, Ian Small, Jacob Icard, Case Miller and Colin Faison.
The Lady Packers won the Wildcat Invitational last weekend, defeating East Laurens and Pierce County in the first two rounds.
The Lady Packers faced off against the Berrien County Lady Rebels in the championship round, winning 4-1 to take the tournament.
The first point came from the No. 1 doubles team of sisters Beylee and Hayden Roberts who dominated winning 6-2, 6-2.
“These two really came out playing smart and setting up each point to throw off their opponents,” said coach Amber Hurst.
The second point came from No. 3 singles, where Sydney Wheeler, after returning from a match off due to her shoulder injury, won in a third set split 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
The Lady Rebels picked up the next point, with No. 2 singles Anna Beth Elliott falling in her match 4-6, 2-6.
The final point came down to No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team, both of who split sets. Two doubles teams of Karli Yarbrough and Annabelle Roberts would be the first to come off the court with the win 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Ava McCranie followed with her win at No. 1 singles 6-1,6-7(2-7),6-1.
“They placed second last year in their tournament and came ready to win this year,” Hurst said. “They all played smart and competitively and deserved this victory. I am really proud of them.”
This was the second win over Berrien this week for the Lady Packers, who defeated the Lady Rebels 3-2 at home on Feb. 21.
On Tuesday, like the Packers, the Colquitt girls won all five points in straight sets.
McCranie won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-1; Wheeler won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles; and Elliott won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Hayden and Beylee Roberts won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-3; and Yarbrough and Annabelle Roberts won at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Packers are 2-1 in the region and 6-3 overall and Hurst is looking forward to the second round of region matches.
“We have a new lineup arrangement and we seem to be playing better,” she said.
Colquitt is scheduled to play at Tift County on Thursday.
