Arguing for a life

MOULTRIE, Ga. — Students from Felicia Richardson’s 10th Grade Accelerated Literature & Composition class at C.A. Gray Junior High School recently learned about making an effective argument. To apply these skills to a real-world problem, students were assigned a candidate in need of a heart transplant. Each candidate was a different age and had a different background. Students were tasked with creating an argument to persuade the ‘medical panel’ to give a newly available heart to their candidate. They participated in several rounds of debate and also had to give powerful counter-arguments in an attempt to win the heart. One of the panel judges commented that the students were so well-prepared for the exercise that it was very hard to make a ruling.
