Colquitt rifle team wins three of four to open season

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County rifle team has opened the 2019 season by winning three of its first four matches, including the first three in a row.
After defeating Turner County, Worth County and Cairo, the Packers fell to Tift County last Monday 1,103-1,081 in Tifton, despite a team season-high score of 281 by junior Asusena Mendez.
The Packers also counted a 277 shot by Karley Walden, a 267 by rookie Josie Kitchen and a 256 by Wesley Nall.
David Jett, David Grace, Adam Taylor, Anna Gonzales, Trinity Ruelas and Michael Wood also shot for Colquitt County.
Walden was the top scorer for the Packers in their season-opening 1,021-875 home victory over Turner County with a 266.
Mendez had a 264, Jordyn Edwards a 247 and Kitchens a 244.
Nall, Taylor, Ruelas, Grace, Wood, Gonzales, Jett, Troy Berry and Bradley Newton also competed for the Packers.
Colquitt went to Sylvester on Jan. 17 to take on Worth County and returned with a 1,096-1,054 victory.
Mendez shot a 280 and Kitchen and Walden each turned in a 273 for the Packers. Edwards had a 270 for the other counting score.
Jett, Nall and Taylor also shot and turned in scores 257, 252 and 250 respectively.
The Packers then went to 3-0 with a 1,082-917 victory at Cairo.
Mendez shot 273 and Kitchen was one shot back at 272. The other scores that counted for the Packers were a 269 shot by Jett and a 268 by Walden.
Edwards, Ruelas, Grace, Wood and Gonzales also shot for the Packers.
Colquitt will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 7, when Irwin County visits.
Also on the schedule are matches at Turner County on Feb. 12; at home against Fitzgerald on Feb. 14; at home against Worth County on Feb. 21; at home against Cairo on Feb. 26; at home against Tift County on Feb. 28; and at Irwin County on March 7.
The Area championship will be held on March 14 in Leesburg.
