SHS girls advance to district championship
The Suwannee High girls soccer team has earned a spot in the district championship game and will be making its first trip to the state playoffs since the 2010-11 season. SHS did this by winning consecutive matches in the District 3-Class 3A Tournament.
On Monday, Suwannee faced Terry Parker in the second round of the district playoffs in Jacksonville. Suwannee beat Parker 7-1 at home back in December. This game was much different.
It was a battle from the beginning and they played the entire regulation without a goal on either side. The first goal didn’t come until 5:20 in the first overtime when Carson Frier found the net, scoring her 40th goal of the season. District playoffs requires two OTs, so Suwannee had to wait to celebrate.
The second and final goal of the game came with 4:45 left in the second OT and it was by senior captain Baylor Burch, lifting SHS to a 2-0 win.
Suwannee is now 13-6-2 and 7-1 in district play. With the win, Suwannee will face Stanton Prep on Thursday in Jacksonville for the district championship.
SHS played at Ed White High on Jan. 23 in a district quarterfinal. The game started slow, but once Suwannee got warmed up, it started scoring at will. Their first goal was scored at 25:25 in the first by Frier, who finished with two goals.
Burch also had two goals. Susie Gonzalez scored one goal and Hayley Gray had a hat Trick. The final score was 8-0 and finished with 14 minutes left in the game.
