Moultrie YMCA gymnasts excel in Sand Dollar Invitational

The Moultrie YMCA MGs competed at the Sand-Dollar Invitational this past weekend in Orlando, Fla.
The meet was hosted by Orlando Metro Gymnastics at the Osceola Heritage Park venue.
Levels 4, Xcel Gold, and Level 6 represented the YMCA.
“This was the first meet of the season for some.,” said Gymnastics Director Kambria Blakely. “There is lots of room for improvement, but I was proud of the way the girls handled tough competition.
“We had several place on events in their division along with some first place finishers. It was a good meet to start the season and I am anxious to see how much they will improve.”
Competing in the first session on Friday for the MGs were the level four gymnasts.
Ya’Kerria Moore was the highest scoring level 4. She was the vault champ in her group with a 9.35. She also placed 5th on bars with an 8.375 and 6th on floor with an 8.575. Moore placed 4th in the AA with a 34.525.
Alayah-Copeland-Lambert placed 3rd on vault with an 8.775 and 3rd on beam with an 8.9. She also placed 5th on floor with an 8.9 and placed 4th in the AA with a 34.25.
Aubree Clements was also the vault champ in her group, scoring a 9.1. She had a personal best on bars with a 9.225, which placed her in the runner up spot for that event and also, placed 5th on floor with an 8.525. Clements finished the meet in 4th place with a 34.225.
Sophia Owen scored an 8.475 on floor and an 8.15 on vault. Her AA for the meet was a 31.325.
Keaton Doane scored an 8.35 on vault.
“The level 4s that competed in this meet looked strong on vault,” said Coach Dawn Harvell. “I was happy with their scores and we will be possibly working some girls towards competing in the next level.”
MGs Xcel Gold competed in the Sunday morning session.
Eva Kirbo was the highest scoring Gold. She had a personal best on bars with a 9.15, for 4th place, and on beam with a 9.175 for 6th place. She also scored an 8.825 on floor and an 8.425 on vault. Kirbo placed 8th in the AA with a 35.575.
Anna Kate Hightower placed 5th on bars with a personal best 9.1. She also placed 6th on beam with an 8.65 and scored an 8.825 on floor. Hightower scored an 8.5 on vault and finished the meet with a 35.075 AA.
Ellery McBryde was the runner-up in her age group on beam with a personal best 9.175. She also placed 3rd on floor and scored an 8.35 on beam and bars. McBryde placed 6th overall with a 35.05.
Samantha Oler placed 8th on floor with a 9.0 and scored a 9.05 on bars. She also scored an 8.2 on beam and an 8.125 on vault. Oler had an AA score of 34.375, which was her personal best. Kayla Scroggins scored an 8.375 on vault. Her vault score was her personal best for that event. She finished the meet with a 31.20.
“The girls bar scores increased at this meet,” said Blakely. “It was also good to see the girls fight to stay on the beam and really get credit for the skills they performed.”
The level 6s finished the weekend for the MGs on Sunday night.
Jacey Williams placed 13th on vault and bars. On vault, she scored am 8.6 and on bars, she scored an 8.975. She scored an 8.8 on floor and an 8.425 on beam. Her AA for the meet was a 34.80.
Becca Clayton scored an 8.8 on floor and an 8.75 on beam. She also scored an 8.3 and finished the meet with a 33.075 AA.
Gabby Smith had a personal best on bars and beam. She also scored an 8.725 for 11th place on vault and scored an 8.35 on floor. Her AA for the meet was a 31.975.
Jaylee Williams competed in her first level 6 meet.
“This was the first time the girls have competed the new vault for level 6,” said Coach Ben Clayton. “They scored pretty well and now that we know what the judges are looking for, we will practice what needs to be fixed to improve scores at the next meet.”
“The girls did a great job competing their new floor routines,” said Blakely. “It was fun to see them dancing to new music. At the next meet, I would like to see them execute their leaps and jumps and be more aggressive with their tumbling.”
The MGs next meet will be the Rose City Invitational at the Thomasville YMCA.
