Public Safety Director James Sommers said after the call came in around 7 p.m. Thursday, Branford Fire Department and Suwannee County Fire Rescue’s Engine 3 responded to smoke showing through the eaves of the house.

Believing someone was inside, a search was conducted and Alford, 78, was found inside.

Following the fire being extinguished, a secondary search was performed but nobody else was found in the residence.

Sommers said the state fire marshal is still investigating the death in conjunction with the state medical examiner, although foul play is not suspected.

The cause of the fire also remains under investigation.
