MANKATO — A toddler appears to be safe after she fell out of a car near the downtown Hy-Vee at Cherry Street near Riverfront Drive shortly before noon Monday.

A video making its way across social media shows a 2-year-old girl, strapped into a carseat, topple out of the driver’s side rear door of a sedan at about 11:45 a.m. as the car turned around a corner approaching the intersection.

Police Cmdr. Dan Schisel said the child was examined by Gold Cross paramedics and was uninjured.

The child was properly fastened in the safety seat but the seat was not fastened to the vehicle seat, according to police.

It’s unclear why the vehicle door opened.

The child’s mother was driving the vehicle and returned to the scene once she realized the child was missing.

Chad Mock, who posted a video of the incident on Facebook, was driving behind and tried to flag the baby’s parents down. He stopped traffic to grab the baby.

Passersby and nearby workers said they saw Mankato police, paramedics and firefighters respond.

Mankato police are recommending the Blue Earth County Attorney’s Office charge the mother with child endangerment and not fastening a child restraint system.
