MOULTRIE, Ga. — Mary Phillips gave an interesting program on Cilvia at the January meeting of the Magnolia Garden Club. Clivia is in the Amaryllis family and is a species of the flowering plant growing in the woodland habitats in South Africa.
Clivias are an evergreen plant grown both for their foliage and flowers. They are bulbs and grow best in zone 9 -11 and they need bright light, but no direct sun. Plant in fast draining, fluffy soil but do not over water. Their blooms come in a variety of colors. Clivia usually blooms in late winter or early spring. Their height is about 18 -24 inches. Their best feature is to last a lifetime and allow for many successful divisions along the way. Their evergreen leaves are gorgeous year round with the extra bonus of orange, yellow or white blooms.
Faye Rowe opened the meeting with the pledge to the American flag. Ruby Bowermeister gave a short devotion on “Women of the Bible.” Her text was from Matthew 1:4-5.
The roll was called with each member answering with the name of a berry. Members brought three horticulture specimens to be judged.
A short business meeting was held. Plans were made for programs for the coming year. Fundraiser winners were Faye Rowe, Peggy Strickland and Mary Phillips.
The Gardener’s Log for January is to sow seeds of sweet peas and larkspur in prepared beds. Plant all types of ornamental trees and shrubs. Transplant perennial daises, cannas, candytuft, etc, also plant pine trees.
The Magnolia Garden Club had their Christmas luncheon in December at the lovely home of Joyce Berg and Lu Clark Members enjoyed the delicious meal and after the meal each member shared their favorite memories.
