DALTON, Ga. — A Dalton company and a Murray County official each received one of numerous bomb threats made across the country on Thursday.

Americhem’s location at 1015 Abutment Road was evacuated by company officials after receiving emails detailing a bomb threat and a request for payment to keep the bomb from being activated, Dalton Police Department Assistant Chief Chris Crossen said.

The Murray County Courthouse was evacuated and bomb-sniffing dogs were used to clear the building of any threats, Murray County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jimmy Davenport said. Clerk of Superior Court Donna Flood received an email similar to those received around the country and the courthouse was evacuated around 3:30 p.m.

According to media reports, several news outlets, government buildings, schools and other locations across the nation received bomb threats on Thursday.

Dalton police and fire units responded to Americhem. Crossen said a search of the building by investigators and company officials did not turn up anything unusual.

“We went through the building and didn’t find anything out of place,” Crossen said. “Our investigators have the emails and we will try to figure out where they originated.”

Crossen said no other locations in Dalton were targeted. A spokesman for the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said he was unaware of any other threats in the county.

Americhem has locations across the United States as well as facilities in Britain and China. Crossen said several Americhem locations received bomb threats.

The FBI issued a statement on Thursday encouraging residents to report “suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety.”

“We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance,” the statement said. “As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety.”
