THOMASVILLE — Thomasville police officers established contact with a shooting death suspect and convinced him to surrender.
A police officer spoke briefly to 20-year-old suspect Quinton Antonio McKinney on Saturday after the predawn death at a residence in the 500 block of Grady Street.
McKinney, 250 Henderson St., surrendered at the Thomas County Jail at 11:30 p.m. Satur-day.
“Within 17 hours, we had this subject in custody,” said Maj. Wade Glover, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.
McKinney, who is charged with murder and aggravated assault, was located in Tallahassee, Florida.
“A lot of information was put out about him to the community,” said Capt. Maurice Holmes, TPD Criminal Investigations Division commander.
Holmes said people told McKinney his identity was known. Resulting pressure led to his surrender, the officer added.
“Anytime you fire a handgun at somebody, you’re considered a dangerous and reckless person,” Holmes said.
The commander described the crime scene as complex.
Two houses were involved — one where the shooting death occurred and another across the street where people ran after the fatal shooting of Michael Moore, 32, and a 38-year-old woman, who survived. Several vehicles and the street also were part of the crime scene, Holmes said.
The crime scene was secured. Witnesses were sequestered. Evidence was gathered. An arrest warrant was issued.
The shooting took place during a card game that involved gambling, Holmes said. The house where the shooting occurred “was one of these locations where people hang out,” he said.
Pointing out that the situation involved a death and injury, it is important to make a quick arrested to prevent victims’ relatives from taking the law into their own hands, Glover said.
Someone lost a son, a brother, Holmes said.
“Our community has really reached out to us and helped to get McKinney as quickly as they did,” Glover added.
Detectives will interview the other victim, who underwent surgery Saturday at Archbold Memorial Hospital.
The investigation is far from over, officers said. Interviewing of witnesses continues.
“The investigation is ongoing and active at this time,” Glover said. “Law enforcement is not able to release further information without compromising the integrity of the investigation.”
