LAKE PARK — U.S. 41 through Lake Park became Santa Claus Lane Saturday as the city mounted its annual Christmas parade, followed by the lighting of the city’s official Christmas tree.

North Essa Street was blocked off in front of City Hall in the late afternoon as residents gathered and vendors offered everything from hot dogs to Mexican barbecue. The city Christmas tree is located on the lawn in front of City Hall at the corner of North Essa Street and U.S. 41.

Hundreds of people lined both sides of West Marion Avenue — also known as U.S. 41 — as the parade neared.

The parade was led by a marching unit from the Lowndes High School Junior Air Force ROTC, followed by Lowndes High Georgia Bridgemen marching band.

So many marchers and vehicles were involved — from fire trucks to horses to a replica Batmobile — it took the parade 30 minutes to pass. Children eagerly scooped up candy thrown to them by the parade participants.

As the parade ended and the sun set, the crowd was treated to carols and hymns sung by several local church groups.

When the musical program was finished, the switch was thrown on the Christmas tree’s lights.

Following the lighting, the guest of honor arrived. Santa Claus arrived by fire truck, and met children and heard their wish lists in a gazebo across from City Hall.
