MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Moultrie teen-ager dropped off at the hospital early Tuesday morning with multiple gunshot wounds died about an hour later.

Jealon Powell, 19, was pronounced dead at 3:31 a.m. at Colquitt Regional Medical Center, Colquitt County Coroner Verlyn Brock said.

“He walked in with the assistance of ER personnel,” Brock said.

Powell was admitted to the hospital at about 2:28 and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, he said. An autopsy will be performed but had not yet been scheduled.

Earlier in the morning Moultrie police responded to the Suzy Q’s convenience store on Veterans Parkway South to an attempted armed robbery. Officers who responded at about 1:45 a.m. found that a clerk had been shot.

The employee did not appear to have life-threatening injuries. He engaged in a shootout during the armed robbery attempt, Moultrie Police Department Lt. Freddie Williams said.

“We’re investigating an attempted armed robbery,” he said. “A clerk was shot and a bad guy is deceased. The clerk was armed and returned fire.”

At the time police did not identify Powell as the suspect in the attempted hold-up. Williams said police will release additional information later in the day.
