VALDOSTA — A storm system that drenched South Georgia and North Florida over the weekend spawned a tornado near the Lowndes and Brooks borders with Florida.
No severe damage resulted, according to a National Weather Service forecaster.
A tornado warning for Lowndes County went out around 3 a.m., Monday. The tornado touched down near Cherry Lake, Florida in Madison County, not far from the Georgia state line, said Eric Bunker, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Tallahassee, Florida office.
While trees were downed, there was no structural damage, he said.
The tornado was part of a system of thunderstorms that moved across South Georgia over the weekend, causing flash flooding and road damage in Lowndes County Monday.
Rainfall amounts from Saturday-Monday in Lowndes County ranged from 9.23 inches in Clyattville to 5.86 inches at a measuring station near Moody Air Force Base, according to the weather service. In Brooks County, 10.23 inches fell near the community of Empress.
