MOULTRIE, Ga. — Two public pools in Moultrie are set for huge upgrades in the coming months as the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority will be using part of the sales tax fund from 2013 to hire consultants to help guide the project in the right direction.

Aquatics H20 and Architecture Unlimited will be taking over as consultants for the $600,000 project that will see Southwest Memorial Pool and the nearby diving well pool undergo huge renovations. Construction can’t start until everything is signed and approved by the consultants, but officials said that was the only hurdle left to clear before this project is able to get off the ground.

Upgrades to both pools will include new filtration, Marcite and plumbing. More details will emerge in the future.

According to Terry Peek, director of the Moultrie-Colquitt County Parks and Recreation Authority, these upgrades are going to be a long process, and it may leave Moultrie with only one working pool during the summer.

“This isn’t going to be done overnight either,” said Peek. “It may take the design teams months to look over things, and there’s no guarantee that it may be done the start of summer.”

However the plan is still to keep at least one pool open six days a week during the summer, he said.

City Manager Pete Dillard thinks this is something that’s been long overdue but it had to be in the right hands to get done.

“I think the authority has put a lot of time and effort into it,” Dillard said. “They have done all the hard work and the next step of course will be the actual work. It’s complicated; it’s something that not everybody can do.”
