LAKE CITY, Fla. — A Port St. Lucie man faces a number of charges following an early-morning shooting incident at the Keg Room Bar.

The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 1:45 a.m. Monday about a man shooting a rifle in the parking lot of the Keg Room Bar, east of Branford on State Road 247.

According to a victim, 42-year-old David Paul Mankamyer was firing the rifle into the air when he confronted the suspect, Sheriff Sam St. John said.

St. John said the victim talked with the suspect and eventually got him to put the rifle down, but when he went to grab the gun a scuffle over the firearm ensued.

During the fight for the gun, it went off and a bullet went through the victim’s shirt but did not hit him, St. John said.

“It went right through his shirt — entrance and exit holes — but didn’t hit him,” St. John added.

“I wouldn’t recommend someone confronting someone with a rifle that is actively shooting and you have no protection.”

A second victim told authorities that the suspect points the gun at her and fired at least one shot at her, according to an SCSO release.

After the victim got the gun away from the suspect, the suspect fled to his truck, according to St. John.

Fearing the suspect was going to grab another weapon, the victim fired off warning shots into the air and the suspect fled the scene, St. John said.

The suspect crashed his truck nearby on 35th Drive and fled the scene on foot, according to the SCSO and Florida Highway Patrol.

With the assistance of the Suwannee Correctional Institution K-9 team, the suspect was found hiding in the floorboard of a vehicle on 35th Drive and taken into custody, an SCSO release said.

St. John said the suspect had been drinking at the bar throughout the night with a couple of friends before leaving. He then returned alone and had a few more drinks before going outside and started shooting the rifle.

St. John, who said there didn’t appear to be any issues with anybody at the bar, said once the shooting began outside, the doors to the bar were locked to prevent the shooter from coming inside.

“It’s just a miracle that he didn’t shoot anybody and nobody got shot while this was taking place,” he said.

Mankamyer, who is a six-time convicted felon including attempted murder charges, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, use of a firearm under the influence of alcohol, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, resisting arrest without violence and trespassing.

Additional charges are pending FHP’s investigation of the accident.
