LIVE OAK, Fla. — The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office received a false report of an active shooter being on the Suwannee High School campus Thursday morning.
Sheriff Sam St. John said the tip was received anonymously through the FortifyFL app.
“I’ve got all the officers there and there is noting going on at all,” St. John said.
Ted Roush, Superintendent of Schools, was thankful for the quick response by SCSO. Rush said officers were on campus within three minutes of the report being received. Due to the quick response, officers were able to determine there wasn’t a threat even before school administrators could place the school on lockdown.
“We’re happy we were able to keep the normalcy for the students,” Roush said.
“We feel really good about our response to the threat.”
St. John said officers are still trying to see if they can find out who sent the tip.
The FortifyFl app is a suspicious activity reporting tool that allows individuals to instantly relay information to appropriate law enforcement agencies and school officials.
Any student, educator, parent or member of the public can report school safety concerns directly to law enforcement and school administrators anonymously and easily through the FortifyFL app.
St. John said this was the second report sent through the app in Suwannee County. In September, Branford High School was placed in lockdown following a report of a shooter based on a social media post.
That report also turned out not to be an active threat. The scare stemmed from a social media message about a “BHS” in Louisiana, St. John said at the time, and that person had previously been arrested for that post.
