Man accused of resisting arrest after domestic incident

MOULTRIE, Ga. — An investigation of a domestic dispute led to the arrest of a Moultrie man on outstanding warrants and new charges as he allegedly resisted officers’ attempts to take him into custody.
Police initially were dispatched at about 1:42 a.m. Saturday to an apartment in the 500 block of 27th Street Southeast, where they spoke with Shamesha Walker and Arthur Lee Smith.
Both told police that “nothing happened” and Walker also said bruising on her face was unrelated to the incident. While police were there they learned that Smith was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants, but he ran from them and eluded their pursuit.
Police later were called back to a report that Smith had returned and was “causing another disturbance.” Police searched an apartment, where they found Smith in a bedroom.
After an officer placed handcuffs on him, Smith tried to pull free from the officer’s grasp. At times, police said, Smith would passively resist by refusing to walk and also continued to snatch away from officers.
Smith resisted all the way to the car and made threats toward bystanders, police said. He also said he would beat the officers if they took off the handcuffs.
Before leaving, Smith demanded $300 from Walker that he recently had given to her. When she said she would put the money on his jail account he continued asking for it while refusing to bend so police could place him in a patrol car.
During the dispute over money Smith used vulgar language, police said, and also tried to kick an officer as they tried to place him in the car.
Smith remained combative after arriving at Colquitt County Jail, police said.
Smith, 34, who had outstanding probation violation warrants, also faces charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
