North Murray 23, Sonoraville 0
North Murray High School claimed the No. 4 seed in Region 6-3A and a spot in the playoffs Friday night with a win on the road against Sonoraville 23-0.
The Mountaineers (6-4, 5-3 in region) needed the win to avoid a multiple-team tie for the final spot in the postseason from their region.
“We are feeling good,” coach Preston Poag said. “I’m pleased with the overall effort. This is three years in a row.”
Poag said with the spot secured, he is feeling just about the same as he did before the game.
“I didn’t have any weight on my shoulders,” he said. “Making the playoffs should happen every year. These kids wanted to get there and they made it happen. I’m super proud of them.”
Chaisen Buckner blocked a punt for a 40-yard fumble recovery touchdown, and quarterback Preston Poag Jr. scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown.
Owen Hannah kicked two field goals and Marco Lopez kicked another for the Mountaineers.
Poag Jr. did exit the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury, and coach Poag said he won’t know the extent of the injury until this morning.
“He’s a tough kid. If there is any way possible he can play, he’ll get in there,” he said.
North Murray will travel to Greater Atlanta Christian next Friday for the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
Dalton 62, Osborne 0
Dalton High School ended its football season with a big win against Osborne Friday night at home 62-0.
The Catamounts (6-4, 4-4 in Region 6-6A) had success through the air and on the ground while scoring often and quickly.
“We got ahead so fast we didn’t get to throw the ball as much as we wanted,” coach Matt Land said.
Dalton junior quarterback Landon Allen ended 4-for-5 for 82 yards with no interceptions while coming out early in the third quarter. While Allen threw no touchdown passes, he did score on a 41-yard run. It was his only run of the night.
The Catamounts controlled the game and the game was played with a running clock for the second half.
Junior running back Jahmyr Gibbs ended with 20 carries for 267 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense for the Catamounts. Senior Jeric Montgomery aided the win with two rushing touchdowns on eight rushes for 84 yards.
Tyis Love scored on an 87-yard kickoff return and also had two catches for 65 yards. Maurice Howard had one rushing score.
Though the Catamounts do not advance to the postseason, Land said there are different things to address.
“I have to start with being proud of the seniors and the hard work that they have put forth,” he said. “Certainly tonight they played well.”
The last time Dalton missed the playoffs was 2010.
“At Dalton there is an expectation to make the playoffs, and I know these players are disappointed to not achieve that,” Land said. “It’s a very rare thing here to miss them, which is a good thing, but it’s not a measure of the success this team had. They grew so much and they came together when it really mattered.”
“I think there are a lot of ways we will reflect on the season,” Land said.
Ridgeland 37, Southeast Whitfield 21
Southeast Whitfield fell to Ridgeland on the road Friday night as its season came to a close 37-21.
The Raiders (3-7, 1-5 in Region 6-4A) led early but could not hold on.
Haralson County 55, Murray County 29
Murray County ended its season winless with a loss to Haralson County on Friday night at home 55-29.
Like many teams this season, the Indians (0-10, 0-8 in Region 6-3A) could not contain Haralson County’s running back Treylon Sheppard, the state’s leading rusher.
“We had a lot trouble with their run game,” coach Chad Brewer said. “We did make some plays but just not enough.”
The Indians did manage to score, however. Ethan Chastain returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the first quarter and Josh Curtis connected with Gage Stanley for the two-point conversion. Running back Cade Petty scored two touchdowns, one in each half, and quarterback Kaleb Jones scored on a quarterback sneak in the second half.
“We had a couple really nice offensive drives in the second half,” Brewer said. “They (Haralson County) were the No. 3 seed out of our region and I could see why. They were big and physical and they ran on everyone all year. I just hope our region does well in the playoffs.”
Ringgold 42, Coahulla Creek 6
Coahulla Creek dropped its final game of the season to Ringgold on the road Friday night 42-6.
The Colts (1-9, 1-7 in Region 6-3A) won their first game since 2015, taking down Murray County in the middle of the season. The win was also the first for Caleb Bagley as a head coach and his first since taking over the program last season.
