MOULTRIE, Ga. — Police were seeking a Colquitt County man who reportedly forced a couple off the roadway on Highway 133 and then brandished a knife on Wednesday afternoon.

After leaving the roadway the car caught on fire and was extinguished by Colquitt County Volunteer Fire Department personnel.

No injuries were reported, police said.

The incident, which occurred at about 2 p.m., was still under investigation on Wednesday and the names of the passengers in the car were not immediately available.

The car in which the couple was driving south on Highway 133 left the roadway and slid to a stop at a nearly 90 degree angle with the roadway after entering a boggy area. The crash occurred about 1/2 mile north of Blasingame Road.

The suspect has a history of domestic violence, Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ronald Jordan said at the scene, and had been involved in an incident with the same woman about a week ago in the city of Moultrie.

The woman’s current boyfriend reportedly defended himself with a stick and the assailant eventually got in his car and left the area.

The accident and investigations by sheriff’s office detectives in what was described as an assault, and the Georgia State Patrol’s investigation of the crash and subsequent removal of the car kept one lane of traffic closed for some time.
